Born in northern Germany Prof. Bergh studied medicine and mathematics in Hannover. During his studies he stayed for a research period in the Medical Image Processing Laboratory, Department of Radiological Sciences at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). After graduating from medical school in 1989 he worked as a physician in departments of neurology and neurosurgery and finalized his doctoral thesis “Principles of digital luminescence radiography and its application in mammography”.

From 1991 on he obtained an education in diagnostic radiology at the Charité/Virchow-Klinikum, Humboldt University Berlin, with special focuses on neuroradiology and digital imaging, which he finalised in 1996 with the German Board Certification in Radiology. Also in 1996 he became appointed Head of the Digital Radiology Unit and later on as IT co-ordinator of the Medical Faculty of the Humboldt University Berlin. From 1999 though 2003 he was acting as Head of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (CIO) of the Goethe-University Hospital Frankfurt with around 100 staff members.

Since 2003 he holds the position of a Director of Information Technology (CIO) of the University Hospital and Medical Faculty Heidelberg, which was extended in 2004 by the responsibility for the Biomedical Engineering department. Both departments together have approximately 160 staff members. End of 2004 he was additionally appointed as Professor for Medical Information Systems by the Medical Faculty Heidelberg. Prof. Bergh has been speaker of the German association of CIOs in university hospitals for four years and was involved as a major participant in nine R&D projects funded by the European Commission and two “G7/8 – Global Healthcare Applications Projects”. He is author or co-author of 40 publications in national and international journals and various presentations of which 65 as invited speaker.
